Agatha Christie, anglická spisovateľka, vlastným menom Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller sa narodila v Torquay. Chcela byť opernou speváčkou (študovala spev), ale na vystupovanie bola príliš hanblivá. Osud jej pridelil iné poslanie. Jej spisovateľské začiatky neboli príliš plodné - napísala niekoľko nevydarených románov. Po tom, čo začala písať detektívky a čitateľom predstavila Hercula Poirota v knihe Záhada na zámku Styles začala kariéra Agatha Christie pomaly stúpať. S detektívnym románom Vražda Rogera Acroyda prišiel prvý výrazný úspech, ktorý bol doslova bestsellerom a dodnes patrí medzi jej najlepšie diela. Ďalšou výraznou postavou v jej dielach, okrem Hercula Poirota, ktorý sa objavil v 33 knihách bola slečna Jane Marplová, o ktorej si mohol čitateľ prvý krát prečítať v roku 1931 v knihe Vražda na fare (The Murder at the Vicarage). Množstvo detektívok či už s Herculom Poirotom, alebo slečnou Marplovou bolo sfilmovaných.
Agatha Christie písala aj pod pseudonymom Mary Westmacottová - napísala 6 psychologických románov, 19 zväzkov detektívnych poviedok, 14 divadelných hier s detektívnym námetom, 2 diela literatúry faktu a knihu básní. V roku 1976 zomrela vo Wallingforde vo veku 85 rokov.
